Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …
After this season’s flop, the Eagles’ wounded offense needs much more than a Band-Aid
– The Athletic This is especially true when it’s juxtaposed against a sense inside the locker room that the Eagles’ powerbrokers (Sirianni, general manager Howie Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie) are reluctant to criticize Hurts. For all that the quarterback has accomplished, including two standout performances on the sport’s biggest stage (one of which earned him Super Bowl MVP honors), he has been the source of much internal frustration, including from teammates other than Brown. Hurts, who has an endorsement deal with Michael Jordan’s brand within the Nike subdivision, fashions himself as the NFL’s “MJ” — witness his hallway pose with a cigar and the Lombardi Trophy last February — and some in the organization take that personally. Jordan, at times, could be abrasive and biting while relentlessly prodding his teammates to push themselves to excellence. He was also, in the opinion of many, the greatest basketball player of all time, as well as the dude you absolutely wanted with the ball in his hands and everything on the line. Hurts had that chance last Sunday, and his performance wasn’t exactly Jordanesque. And although that single failure doesn’t disqualify him from being able to lead, some of his other qualities — obsessive perfectionism, hyper-focus that can come off as aloofness, a tendency to go his own way — aren’t always serving him well in tense moments such as this one.
Source: Eagles showed interest in Charlie Weis Jr. before their season was over – BGN
As soon as the final seconds ticked away on the Eagles’ Wild Card round loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, it was obvious the Eagles would be parting ways with offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Bleeding Green Nation has learned that the Eagles were inquiring about then-Ole Miss/now-LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, Jr. weeks before the season was over. And though the Eagles “officially” announced Patullo would no longer be the team’s offensive coordinator in an announcement by Nick Sirianni on Tuesday, multiple SEC sources confirmed the Eagles were serious about Weis, Jr. before the announcement was public, enough to make arrangements for him to fly into Philadelphia to interview at the NovaCare Complex possibly as soon as next week.

Brandon Lee Gowton joins the podcast to discuss the Eagles’ dismissal of Kevin Patullo and what the future holds for Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts with a new coach coming in.
‘Making sacrifices:’ Roseman warns that once again Eagles can’t keep everyone – NBCSP
We watched last offseason as the Eagles lost Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Isaiah Rodgers and several other key free agents from the Super Bowl championship team. Should we expect more of the same this offseason? Howie Roseman warned Thursday that for the Eagles to continue retaining their best players they’re going to have to move on from valuable but lesser players. That’s just life in a salary cap world. The cap just doesn’t allow you to pay everybody or keep everybody. The challenge is to stay competitive while dealing with the inevitable free agency losses. So far, Roseman has managed to do this five years in a row. “As you get better, you have a natural arc of the team,” Roseman said. “I think that when you look at our team, we drafted a lot of offensive players, we resigned a lot of offensive players, (then) we drafted a lot of defensive players that were young on rookie contracts. There’s natural transition in what we do. I’m not making an excuse or anything, but there’s a national transition in that in terms of what you’re paying your guys, which side of the ball you’re paying guys who are coming up.”
Takeaways from Nick Sirianni’s and Howie Roseman’s year-end press conference – PhillyVoice
JimmySays: The Eagles changed defensive coordinators during the 2023 season, and the defense proceeded to get even worse. Still, a play-calling change might’ve at least made the offense somewhat less predictable. Then again, the Eagles’ delusional staff didn’t think they were predictable, so…
Bowen: You Say You Want an Evolution? Eagles’ Nick Sirianni says he agrees in year-end news conference – PHLY
Another popular opinion is that Hurts is resistant to change, or that the team has to work within his limitations as a passer. “I think you saw this year that he’s open to do a bunch,” Sirianni said. “We were under center probably more than we have been. Different motions, different things like that. … Jalen’s proved this to everybody, that he’ll do whatever it takes to win football games. “Sometimes that’s throwing it a bunch, sometimes that’s running it a bunch, sometimes it’s him handing it off a bunch. He’ll do whatever it takes to win. … He pushes himself to do new things. He pushes himself to excel at the things that he has already done so well, and he’s proven to everybody, year-in, year-out, all he cares about is winning, and all he cares about is being able to hold that trophy up at the end of the year.” As season wrapups go, this one was not revelatory. But it did seem energetic, and optimistic, two things that weren’t always in evidence during the Eagles’ 2025 struggles.
Three free agents that could fit Washington Commanders offensive coordinator David Blough – Hogs Haven
Following a dismal season, and a brief period of reflection, the Washington Commanders quickly parted ways with Kliff Kingsbury. The list of possible replacements to lead Jayden Daniels into 2026 was long, with more than one writer or analyst predicting that with his job on the line, Dan Quinn would not risk selecting a rookie candidate for the position. Quinn ultimately proved them wrong as he selected an internal candidate, David Blough. While the young coach has multiple years of experience leading NFL offenses as a quarterback, Blough only has two years of coaching experience and none calling plays. While there is certainly an air of hope surrounding the hire, there is also some significant trepidation as well. Adam Peters and Dan Quinn have gambled a lot on the potential wunderkind, so it would be in their best interest to provide Blough plenty of support in his inaugural season.
Jonathan Gannon would be a disastrous defensive coordinator hire for the Cowboys – Blogging The Boys
By the way, while Gannon didn’t call defensive plays as the head coach, his Cardinals defenses were still awful. Their best season was 2024, when they ranked 16th in EPA/play. They were in the bottom five the other two seasons, and Arizona was 28th in EPA/play over the three-year span Gannon led the team. Gannon has also been the subject of two fairly significant controversies. His hiring in Arizona was immediately overshadowed by a tampering investigation regarding how he was hired. It ended with the Cardinals giving up 28 spots in the draft order as punishment. Then, this year, Gannon drew intense scrutiny after striking one of his players following a costly fumble, which led to the Cardinals personally fining Gannon $100,000 over the incident. To boil it all down to one thing, Gannon wouldn’t represent change. Not only is he a proud disciple of Eberflus, he’s frequently demonstrated the same kind of stubbornness and lack of in-game awareness that got Eberflus in so much trouble. And his questionable conduct also makes it hard to square Gannon as fitting Schottenheimer’s bill of a teacher. Hiring Gannon would ultimately signify that the Cowboys learned nothing from this past year.
John Harbaugh’s NY Giants coaching staff: Examining coordinator options – Big Blue View
Todd Monken – Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator at Baltimore is the natural first option. In fact, the current belief is that biggest obstacle to Monken becoming the Giants’ offensive coordinator is the possibility that the Cleveland Browns could hire him to be their head coach. Monken is a creative and experienced play-caller who has had success at both the collegiate and NFL levels. He called a pair of National Championship offenses for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2021 and 2022, and also helped develop Lamar Jackson into more of a Pro Style passer in 2023 and 2024 after Greg Roman’s read-option based offense grew stale. Monken runs what is generally termed a “spread offense”, but is an amalgamation of a wide range of concepts and philosophies from both college and the NFL. Harbaugh fought for Monken to remain in Baltimore, which is believed to be one of the reasons the Ravens fired him. So, it makes sense Harbaugh would bring him to the Giants.
The Giants Already Had the Vibes. Now They’ll Also Have John Harbaugh. – The Ringer
“Giants snagging their savior coach in marriage made in heaven,” read an arguably understated headline in the New York Post at 1:39 a.m. ET Thursday morning. By 8:49 a.m., the franchise’s own social media account had posted a single smirk emoji, a little bat signal to the Big Blue masses that the glorious rumors must be true: that the New York Giants were signing former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to a reported five-year, $100 million deal to helm the team. The fact that the contract still hadn’t been technically inked as of Thursday afternoon didn’t stop fans from rejoicing: “Best possible outcome for this franchise,” one pal wrote in my Giants group chat. “This is a gift.”
NFL Expert Picks for the Divisional Playoffs – SB Nation
The playoffs are rolling on into the divisional round, where the rubber meets the road for a lot of these teams. Whatever “gimmes” might have been on the schedule are gone, the No. 1 seeds have been thrown into the mix, and this season it’s anyone’s guess what will happen. In terms of a “lock” this week, the only game we’re close to unanimous on is the Seahawks to beat the 49ers. That could change greatly if Sam Darnold’s injury is worse than expected, but ultimately it’s less of a case of thinking San Francisco is bad, and more the unfortunate reality that they’ve been wrecked by injuries this year. A healthy Niners team would likely dominate the entire NFC, but that’s not the reality we live in.
NFL Divisional Round bold predictions: Rams and Bears produce highest-scoring playoff game ever – NFL.com
Rams outlast Bears in highest-scoring playoff game ever. The highest-scoring postseason game in NFL history was an NFC West-NFC North showdown back in the 2009 Wild Card Round. In that game, 38-year-old Kurt Warner and the Cardinals defeated 26-year-old Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, 51-45, in an overtime thriller. We’ll get a little déjà vu on Sunday evening, when the Rams, led by seasoned veteran Matthew Stafford, top the Bears, led by second-year pro Caleb Williams, 52-45, breaking the record (by one point) and sending Los Angeles back to the NFC Championship Game.
2026 NFL draft rankings: Field Yates’ top 25 prospects – ESPN
23. Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia*. Height: 6-7 | Weight: 315. In full disclosure, I had Freeling earmarked as more likely to return to college than declare for the draft, as he has just a bit over one full year of starting experience — he took over as a starter with four games left in the 2024 season. It’s easy to see why scouts have been enamored with his movement traits and big frame. He must add some weight to his build to improve his core strength and overall base, but his starter kit of traits screams NFL left tackle: length, footwork, pass protection skills and more. He’s a name to file away as a potential riser during the predraft process.
