In true Sunderland fashion, we left it very late to announce our sixth and final summer window signing, officially completing the signing of 18-year-old Ecuadorian forward Juan Riquelme Angulo from South American talent factory Independiente del Valle.
The highly rated centre-forward joins the Black Cats on a five-year deal for a reported fee around £5 million.
Angulo is an unknown name on these shores but a player whose sheer physical presence and clinical instincts have made him one of the most talked-about
teenagers in South American football. Here we take a look at who he is, what he can bring and how he may fare on Wearside.
Who is Juan Riquelme Angulo?
Born in 2008 in San Lorenzo, Ecuador, Juan Riquelme Angulo developed in the youth academy of Independiente del Valle. Despite sharing a name with Argentine playmaker Juan Román Riquelme, Angulo is a 6ft 4in central striker who combines brute force, aerial threat, and an eye for goal.
After impressing at youth international level, most notably in the U17 Copa America. Angulo’s rapid rise into the Independiente first-team has put him on the radar of scouts across South America and Europe.
He marked his professional debut for Independiente del Valle, in March 2026, scoring against Mushuc Runa, and later that month he was then called up to the Ecuador senior squad for the first time and also featured in the Copa Libertadores.

As the stats show, despite being early in his career Angulo is capable of being an imposing physical presence winning over half of his duels. His physical profile provides an option to hold up direct play and attack crosses, but in a different manner to Brian Brobbey’s sheer strength.
He also has an eye for goal, generated an extortionately high xG per 9o compared to Top 5 league averages and compared to the likes of Brobbey and Isidor last term.
The Verdict
Angulo becomes the latest young talent to make the jump directly from Independiente del Valle’s renowned youth academy, which previously produced top stars like Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié, and Willian Pacho and is a player who fits Sunderland’s model of acquiring high-value assets before their market price explodes.
Despite the excitement around such a prospect, fans shouldn’t expect an instant 20-goal striker walking through the doors at the Academy of Light – however, we should have quiet confidence that we’ve unearthed a gem in the young Ecuadorian.
With a manager grounded in youth development and excellent roles models around the club, Angulo should be given time to develop and we’ll all look on with optimism that he truly thrives on Wearside.
