Following the Colorado Avalanche’s robust nine-pick draft haul from over the weekend, it’s time to see some of these prospects in action. Before signing off for the summer there is one more week of activity which includes the annual development camp. This is where young prospects and a handful of invites the organization has interest in spend a few days learning about the Avalanche and getting pro level tips on training, skill development and what it takes to make the NHL.
It is an interesting roster
of attendees comprised of 27 players including 15 Avalanche draft picks. A few are already contracted minor league players such as Saige Weinstein, Rilen Kovacevic and Grant Ahcan. Six of the nine members from the just selected Avalanche draft class will be present with third round pick Beckett Hamilton headlining as the top prospect among this gathering.
Colorado’s fifth round pick from 2023, Russian defenseman Nikita Ishimnikov is a surprise addition this year as he’s been playing in Russia ever since getting drafted and spent half the season with Avtomobilist in the KHL last season. Usually the Russian prospects don’t randomly show up to development camp especially if it’s not conveniently right after attending the draft, so something might be up. Ishimnikov is a six-foot-two right shot known more for defense than scoring.
The schedule of on-ice events kicks off on Tuesday, June 30th with three consecutive days of practice. The first two days are split into two groups, one session each, and then they combine groups for one practice on the third day.
What are you looking forward to learning about from development camp? Who should we keep our eyes on?
