The USMNT has played its first match of the 2030 World Cup cycle. Mauricio Pochettino named several newcomers in the starting lineup, including Justin Ellis up front, Cavan Sullivan in support, Peyton Miller at left back, George Campbell at center-back, and bringing back Yunus Musah in midfield after a long hiatus.
Justin Ellis rewarded Pochettino for his selection by opening the scoring in the 4th minute, assisted by Gio Reyna’s free kick. Peru was able to equalize 11 minutes later when Gianluca
Lapadula headed home from Yoshi Yotun, and it went to halftime 1-1.
It stayed that way until Pochettino made 5 changes in the 61-62 minute mark, bringing on Antonee Robinson, Sebastian Berhalter, and debutants Mathis Albert, Zavier Gozo, and Julian Hall. Albert quickly won a penalty, which Malik Tillman converted in the 66th minute. Six minutes later, Sebastian Berhalter put a dangerous ball into the box and Julian Hall found the net for his first USA goal. Late on, Berhalter got a long-range goal of his own in the 90th minute, assisted by Hall, and it finished 4-1.
