On Tuesday, G Martin Somerville told On3’s Joe Tipton that he planned to enter the transfer portal when it opens next week, marking the third reported departure from the Seminole program, alongside G Cam Miles and F Shah Muhammad.
Somerville spent one season in Tallahassee in Luke Loucks’ inaugural season and became a key component for Florida State off the bench. The sophomore finished the year averaging 8.0 points per game with 2.4 assists per game on 36%/37%/79% splits. He flourished at the end of the season, including a 23-point outburst against Virginia Tech in one of FSU’s best road wins of the year and a seven-assist effort versus Cal in game one of the ACC tournament. During the few minutes that Rob McCray sat, Somerville ran the offense and became a lightning rod in a sixth-man role.
The loss of Somerville hurts Florida State, which will now lose its top-two primary ball handlers, making a veteran point guard one of Loucks’s top portal priorities.
Somerville began his career at UMass Lowell before transferring to the Seminoles last offseason. His next team will be his third in three seasons.
