The San Diego Padres evened the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a big way on Tuesday night. The Padres topped the Diamondbacks, 9-4 but it was how they did it that was so impressive. San Diego jumped all over Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez. The Padres put up three runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back.
San Diego starter Randy Vasquez took advantage of pitching with a lead and turned in a traditional start on the mound. He was impressive in his six innings of work.
He attacked hitters and let his defense play behind him. Vasquez allowed just two hits and gave up just one walk with one strikeout.
The Padres did not rest on their six-run lead and it was a good thing because after making the score 8-0 with runs in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh, the Diamondbacks hit two two-run home runs off German Marquez to make the score, 8-4. San Diego continued to apply pressure and scored its final run of the contest in the top of the ninth inning. After Marquez struggled in the seventh, Bradgley Rodriguez pitched a scoreless eighth and Griffin Canning finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
Manny Machado provided the spark on offense, and the result was a Padres win. The third baseman went 3-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI. Jackson Merrill also finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI and Jake Cronenworth chipped in with a 3-for-5 night with an RBI. Cronenworth also played great defense throughout the game. Ty France was the only San Diego starter not to record a hit in the game. Gage Workman who was acquired on Monday, made his Padres debut and finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
San Diego will look to make it two in a row tonight against Arizona at 6:40 p.m. Newly acquired starter Casey Mize is scheduled to make his debut with the Padres.

- Shortstop Xander Bogaerts left the game early on Tuesday after fouling a ball off his foot. He was replaced in the field by Sung-Mun Song.
- It is never a fun time of year to be a prospect in the San Diego system because there is no guarantee the players will still be in the system once the trade deadline passes. That does not mean the games stop though and Cheri Bell of Gaslamp Ball has all the details from the Padres minor league affiliates.
- Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta pitched for Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. Musgrove pitched well over 2.2 innings, but Pivetta walked off the mound in the middle of an at-bat. It was later revealed he felt some tightness in his elbow but threw an additional 30 pitches in the bullpen without issue. He is going to be evaluated to determine the next course of action.
- Jose E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones have one last step before they become owners of the Padres and that should come next week when the other 29 owners vote to approve their purchase of the franchise.
