Despite the Super Bowl on Sunday, it feels like the Chicago Bears are amidst one of the two major news cycle lulls in the offseason. The NFL combine is still 3 weeks away, free agency doesn’t start until March 11th, and the NFL draft is still 2.5 months into the future — so there is time to gab a little bit.
So let’s gab — really gab. I want to hear everyone’s bold take. A prediction that makes other fans clutch their pearls.
What is your bold offseason prediction?
Mine?
I think the Bears trade for Dexter Lawrence — by sending Tyrique Stevenson
and picks.
Look, I don’t put this on the internet without knowing that a slew of Big Blue View readers will be waiting in the comments section for me. I get it. But, I did say bold, so here we are.
Let’s first take a look at it from the Bears side. Dexter Lawrence is one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL, and has long been the heart and soul of the New York Giants defense. The Bears currently lack talent along the defensive interior. Gervon Dexter (our big Dex) has been inconsistent despite strong sack totals for a DT, and Grady Jarrett was a letdown after signing a big deal in the offseason.
Dexter Lawrence is a 3 time Pro Bowler, and two time 2nd Team All-Pro. As a NT, he has managed gaudy numbers, racking up 30.5 sacks, 40 TFL, and 103 QB hits across 7 seasons while providing a stout presence against the run game. He’s the exact type of guy they could use in the middle.
Now let’s look at it from the Giant’s perspective. The Giants have a new coach coming in that is used to winning his way. What is his way, exactly? Long and aggressive defensive backs. Let’s take a look at some players who have excelled under Harbaugh:
- Ladarius Webb: 9 Seasons, 15 INTs, 91 PD | 5’-10”, 31.5” Arms
- Marlon Humphrey: 9 Seasons, 23 INTs, 104 PD | 6’-0”, 32.25” Arms
- Nate Wiggins: 2 Seasons, 4 INT, 27 PD | 6’-1”, 30.5” Arms
- Kyle Hamilton: 4 Seasons, 5 INT, 36 PD | 6’-4”, 33” Arms
That’s more than a trend. That appears to be Harbaugh’s defensive cornerstone. Meanwhile, the New York Giants’ defense is built inverse of that. They have stud after stud on the DL, but lack a true playmaker on the back end. Players like Paulson Adebo, Jevon Holland, Dane Belton, and Cor’dale Flott are not exactly game changing players. The Giants ranked 23rd in the league with 9 INTs last season — not a standard that Harbaugh holds.
Enter Tyrique Stevenson.
Stevenson seems to be the exact type of player that Harbaugh values. Despite falling out of favor (weirdly) in 2025, Stevenson has 7 INTs across three seasons, with 38 PDs, and 5 FFs. He is mercurial when playing well and has a knack for creating turnovers. Furthermore, Stevenson has the size Harbaugh appears to desire. At 6’-0” with a 32.25” wing span, he’s rangy and frequently makes plays using his large frame.
If the Bears want to make this trade, they would likely need to add in a 3rd round pick and maybe a day 3 selection to sweeten things. For the Giants, though, you get a CB with a nose for the ball, size, and starting experience while earning some cap relief and draft picks for a new regime.
The Bears get the missing piece to their defensive line that can help players like Sweat, Booker, G. Dex, and Jarrett thrive.
It might be bold — but I think it could make a lot of sense.
