Shaheen Holloway is doing some of his best coaching work in South Orange this season. After a disastrous 2024-25 campaign, the Pirates have already nearly doubled last year’s win total. They are winning with defense and resilience.
Holloway has his Pirates (13-2, 3-1 Big East) playing tough basketball. Seton Hall was picked to finish last in the conference but currently sits near the top, fresh off a 16-point comeback win over Creighton.
The Pirates boast the seventh-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 62.4 points per game. They are led by the backcourt pressure of Adam Clark, who tops the conference in steals (2.3 spg). If Georgetown is careless with the ball, Clark will turn those turnovers into transition points.
Inside, the battle on the glass will be physical. Stephon Payne is averaging a massive 12.5 rebounds in league play. Georgetown’s front court—Julius Halaifonua, Caleb Williams, and the shot-blocking Iwuchukwu—must box out effectively to prevent second-chance points.
Offensively, Seton Hall is balanced but not explosive. AJ Staton-McCray leads them with 12.8 points per game. Their danger lies in their ability to rally; they have overcome double-digit deficits in back-to-back games.
What’s at Stake for Georgetown
After a tough 56-50 road loss to DePaul, Ed Cooley’s squad (9-6, 1-3 Big East) faces a surprising Seton Hall team that has defied preseason expectations. While the offense struggled mightily in the “Wintrust Arena” outing, there are silver linings to hold onto.
KJ Lewis continues to look like a legitimate Big East star, posting 18 points and seven rebounds against the Blue Demons, and the return of Vince Iwuchukwu provided an immediate defensive spark with four blocks. Fans will be looking to see if the chemistry improves to something close to those Maryland or Clemson games.
Offensive rhythm is the priority. Scoring 50 points, as the team did against DePaul, simply won’t get it done in the Big East. Malik Mack (14.4 ppg) and Caleb Williams (10.4 ppg) need to provide support for Lewis, who has been carrying a heavy load recently. Yet again, good things happen with when paint touches are a priority.
A win tonight would be massive for momentum. It would stabilize the record at 10-6 and 2-3 in the conference, keeping the Hoyas in the mix as the season heats up and they get ostensibly healthier.
