The splashy free-agent signings have come and gone for most of the 32 NFL teams, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t moves to be made to address roster needs and bring in players who can help the Buffalo Bills this year.
On Thursday, president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane converted the money the Bills saved when they didn’t match the offer sheet for offensive lineman Ryan Van Demark into three veterans at positions of need.
Buffalo is reuniting with a former wide receiver and
adding two new offensive linemen to the rotation, and today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblings leads off by recapping the moves and what they mean for Buffalo’s roster in 2026.
Bills bring back Trent Sherfield, sign Austin Corbett, Lloyd Cushenberry III
When Van Demark signed the Minnesota Vikings’ offer sheet and the Bills decided not to match it, $3.5 million in salary cap space opened up, which Beane used to sign wide receiver Trent Sherfield, guard/center Austin Corbett, and center Lloyd Cushenberry III to one-year contracts on Thursday.
Sherfield spent the 2023 season with the Bills, catching 11 passes for 86 yards with a touchdown (pictured above against the Miami Dolphins). Sherfield excelled as a downfield blocker for the Bills, bringing a physical element to Buffalo’s offense, and he was also invaluable as a special teams gunner, appearing on 35% of special teams snaps. With Tyrell Shavers likely to miss a large portion of the season recovering from a torn ACL, Sherfield will compete to be his replacement as the fifth receiver and core special teamer.
Corbett has started 78 games and has played in 94 games in eight seasons in the NFL, and he brings versatility to Buffalo’s offensive line. He was a second-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft. He could be a candidate to replace David Edwards at the left guard position.
Cushenberry has started 80 games across six seasons, most recently as the Tennessee Titans’ starting center for 15 games last year. He was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team after starting 16 games for the Denver Broncos in 2020. He’s looking at serving as a backup for the Bills this year.
