Vinicius Junior’s comment — “I’m going to leave this team” — as he walked off during El Clasico on Sunday wasn’t just frustration in the moment. It echoed a growing unease that began months ago. While
various reports have never suggested he has formally asked to leave the club, the feeling of disconnect between Vini and Madrid’s new coach has become increasingly evident.
According to a report from Guilleme Balague for the BBC, the tension traces back to the Club World Cup, when Xabi Alonso surprised the dressing room by benching Vinicius for the semifinal against PSG. Ultimately Vini started the match after Trent’s injury but the initial decision was a clear signal from Alonso: performance and discipline would outweigh reputation.
Under Carlo Ancelotti, Vinicius had near-total creative license, Vini was the “franchise” player. Alonso, however, has brought a more controlled and tactical approach, prioritizing structure and team balance and favoring Mbappe as his “go-to-guy”. That change hasn’t come easily for a player who thrives on instinct and freedom.
Alonso has reinforced that Vinicius won’t play every minute, and competition from Rodrygo is part of the plan. Either Vinicius gets used to his new role or the tantrums and conflict will continue all season.
