Bayern Munich were handed a shock by DFB-Pokal hosts VfL Osnabrück. The traveling Bavarians maintained their cool and came back from behind to secure a sumptuous 1-4 victory in the City of Peace.
“It was a tough Pokal game against a tough away opponent. They scored a perfect goal at the start, but we stayed calm throughout the game – it was a good away win,” said Bayern manager Vincent Kompany in the post-match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Fortune favored the brave
Osnabrück were not under the pressure of the occasion
against the German giants. In they capitalized on the surging support from the home crowd and used it to fuel their bold play to upset the Bavarians. The early counter-press caught Vincent Kompany’s men off-guard.
The long ball from the Osnabrück backline was managed poorly by Jonathan Tah who fell to the ground. The homeside hero Robin Meißner won both duels against the Bayern center-backs and found space just as his opponents were was transitioning back into defense. Finding the perfect opportunity, he fired off an absolute rocket besting the Bayern backline and Jonas Urbig to score a ravishing goal.
The Bayern machine roared back
The past two seasons has seen one particular department consistently perform well and that is the Bayern attack. They have repeatedly been at a few levels above the midfield and defense. The trio of Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise often shoulder the comeback of the team and today was no different.
While it might seem like a hot-take to overemphasize the importance of the attack, they have really led the way with body language, eagerness to challenge and win more duels and force the opponents to rally their men in defensive efforts rather than attack.
Having said that Tom Bischof’s integration has been inspiring and he is one who can take the midfield’s ability to match the level of the attackers. Olise and Kane were the picks of the game with chance creation and sublime finishing skills. The vulnerability in conceding goals in transition has not gone away and remains a sore spot for the Bavarians. For now however, it was a commendable effort to comeback and reassert themselves despite going down early. On to the next one!
