After a nearly disastrous home opener, your Kansas State Wildcats get back to action today against the Knights from West Point (Army), looking to finally get in a productive rhythm.
The Wildcats have opened the season at 1-1, but have yet to look like a cohesive unit that was picked pre-season as a favorite to win the conference. These Cats have yet to show anything close to a complete game of good football, though flashes from a few drives here and there have shown what they are truly capable of.
Army isn’t exactly going to be an easy team to get through, and while North Dakota should have been a much easier mark, the Wildcats made them look like their far more successful in-state neighbors. The Knights are, as they always have been, a run-first, second, and third kind of team. They run a wishbone triple option, and while one of the oldest forms of offense the system has enough wrinkles to cause even the best teams issues. K-State will have to be assignment sound on defense to keep the Knights from running away with this.
On offense, the Cats need to stay on the field for longer than three downs at a time, and need to start showing they are capable of generating points consistently. This is the time for a breakout game for this beleaguered offense, and anything less is a bad omen for the rest of the season. Army is no slouch, but the schedule doesn’t get any easier.
Time to show us what they are made of.
