CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: Another Yankees season has come to a disappointing end as the Rays swept them out of the ALDS, and the postmortem has already begun. There’s a whole host of questions to ponder about this team, ranging from the futures of Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman to where Aaron Judge slots back in on the field and how the offense around him can be improved. A lockout looms like a dark cloud on top of all of this speculation to boot.
FanGraphs | Davy Andrews: The Yankees were credited
with four errors in their Game 2 5-2 loss at the Trop, but if you were watching the game, you’d know that the defense looked shoddy even beyond those four plays. Here, Andrews provides a holistic breakdown of the Yankees’ defensive performance for each position, including non-error misplays such as Luis Garcia Jr. failing twice to receive errant but catchable throws at first base. NY Post | Mark W. Sanchez: George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones looked like they might be long-term contributors against the Red Sox, but so far in the ALDS they’ve looked like rookies out of their depth. Lombard Jr. had a disastrous fifth inning when he failed to convert grounders from Chandler Simpson and Jonny DeLuca into outs. Jones was simply overmatched against Drew Rasmussen, going 0-for-3 with two Ks. One game is certainly far from enough to write these promising youngsters off, but there’s no denying that their first foray into postseason play has taken a turn for the worse.
The Athletic | Jayson Stark: ($) Finally, Jayson Stark has devoted the final section of his Weird & Wild column to discuss the historical significance of Yankees’ Game 2 error-palooza. Not to spoil it too much, but it turns out that committing that many errors that early in a game is quite rare in postseason history.
