San Diego Wave announced on Tuesday morning that defender Trinity Armstrong was placed on the season-ending injury list after only just returning for two matches from the list following the end of the midseason NWSL break.
The 18-year-old defender had a standout season as a rookie in 2025 as a centerback with a goal-scoring ability, but ended the season by injuring her left knee in the Wave’s NWSL playoff loss against the Portland Thorns. Armstrong announced on social media that the new injury is
to her right knee.
“Six months rebuilding my left knee. Two league games in on my right. Fully ruptured ACL and lateral meniscus,” Armstrong said in an instagram post. “Supposedly my strongest leg and third surgery in three years.”
Armstrong made her first appearance in the Wave’s first match back as a substitute in the right back position in a 2-0 win against Gotham FC. She also appeared on the front line in the Wave’s 2-0 loss to Angel City and was not originally on the injury list heading into the Wave’s match against KC Current, but was added late on the day of the match.
“Our hearts are with [Armstrong] in this difficult time,” said Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “She will have the full support from this team and entire organization as she navigates her recovery.”
The Wave play their next match at home against the Seattle Reign on Sunday, July 26.
