As the Cleveland Browns continue to remake their entire offense during the offseason (the offensive line being the focal point), the rest of the unit remains unchanged. The wide receiver room still needs work. Another position that remains unchanged is the quarterback room. Second-year pros Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, along with veteran Deshaun Watson, make up the room as it stands right now.
Based on past performance, the quarterback group is not good enough and could limit the offensive
ceiling.
When it comes to Sanders, the tape shows more bad than good. Granted, Sanders is a rookie, and the supporting cast was terrible, but the progression wasn’t there in the second half of the season. He hasn’t shown that he is the leader to be QB1, but someone has to be at this point, at least for conversation.
Dillon Gabriel seems to be the odd man out in this room, despite GM Andrew Berry telling media at the NFL combine that they “haven’t forgotten about” him. Gabriel’s limitations and ceiling in a Todd Monken offense will do more harm than good, and it’s possible Gabriel will not be on the roster when offseason workouts end.
Deshaun Watson is doing everything he can to get back on the field, considering how this is his last year on his contract, and the team will likely move on from him. The team has no reason to play him again, while Monken seems open to any option at this point.
The current market for the free agency quarterback class has been settled to a degree. QB Malik Willis received a hefty payday from the Miami Dolphins, QBs Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa found new homes after being released from their previous homes, and Geno Smith decided to return to his old stomping grounds in East Rutherford for the New York Jets.
The rest of the class has less than inspiring choices, but it doesn’t mean that the team is looking at improving the room in other ways. It’s clear that the Indianapolis Colts are going to move on from their former 1st round pick Anthony Richardson. Richardson, who has all the physical and athletic gifts you want in a quarterback but is being held back by a lack of playing time and availability, is someone the Browns could look to trade for. In a Monken offense, Richardson fits the mold of what he runs. In terms of his passing ability, Richardson needs a ton of work in that area (he has the ability to stretch the field vertically), such as accuracy, footwork, and mechanics.
Considering how the Browns aren’t contending anytime soon, Richardson has no realistic expectations. Another name is Tennessee Titans QB Will Levis. It’s unpopular to some, but it should be a possibility. If the team wants to take a flier on a QB on the market, Trey Lance is another possibility.
It’s early in the offseason, but if the Browns aren’t content with the current QB room and are looking to improve it. Despite the lack of activity they are showing right now, Cleveland could still be looking to add a veteran quarterback.
Is there a veteran you think the Browns should add to the quarterback room at this point?
