Newcastle United’s squad could suffer further losses before the summer transfer window closes, even though most of the attention has naturally focused on the potential incoming transfers left to complete Matthias Jaissle’s squad.
Regarding sales, there are still several current players whose futures in Tyneside remain unresolved. Veteran goalie Nick Pope has been linked with a move after falling down the goalkeeping hierarchy, while Joe Willock has attracted interest from Besiktas entering the final
year of his contract.
Jacob Murphy, who was one of the first players whispered to be on his way out this summer, has now joined them in the rumour mill for good.
According to TransferFeed, the 31-year-old winger is available for transfer, although his performances during the Magpies’ preseason may have given Jaissle something to think about.
“Reports indicate that Jacob Murphy is also available for sale, although strong performances in pre-season may have altered Matthias Jaissle’s thinking on the right winger, who is understood to be an important internal figure,” TransferFeed reported.
The possibility of Murphy leaving is not entirely new. The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Newcastle “may listen to offers” for the winger, whose contract expires next summer.
That contractual situation leaves Newcastle with a decision to make: selling Murphy before Sept. 1 would allow the club to receive a guaranteed fee, but waiting until January means risking losing him for nothing next summer if he agrees to a deal with someone from Jan. 1 onward.
Of course, selling Murphy now would also remove another experienced player from a squad that has already lost considerable leadership, and that doesn’t have many depth options on the right wing past starter Anthony Elanga.
Murphy has been a steady contributor on the pitch this summer, assisting Will Osula’s goal against Strasbourg in Newcastle’s final preseason friendly and donning the captain’s armband in the preseason.
There is no indication in either The Athletic or TransferFeed’s reporting that an offer has arrived or that Newcastle is actively pushing Murphy toward the exit. The situation instead appears to be one in which the Magpies are prepared to consider a sale if the right opportunity emerges, whether that comes from Everton or elsewhere.
