When Richard Hughes officially departed the club at the close of the summer transfer window, most assumed Liverpool would be quick to appoint his successor and many expected assistant sporting director David Woodfine would be promoted into the top job.
Two weeks on and with no successor yet named it seems as though the job may not in fact be Woodfine’s, or at least if he does end up getting it the Reds want to further consider their options first, and the latest has them eyeing up Brentford technical
director Lee Dykes for the role.
According to the BBC, Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon—who many Liverpool fans will remember as the man who ensured Jürgen Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers in 2015—is heading up the search and has spoken with Dykes about the job.
He’s not the only or perhaps even leading candidate, though—just one whose name we now know. The Reds are also said to have been interested in Brentford sporting director Phil Giles, though they don’t believe he would consider leaving the London club for any suitor.
Other rumoured candidates since Hughes announced he would depart ahead of the summer transfer window have included current Liverpool technical director Julian Ward and global talent director Matt Newberry and Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche.
