Cleveland lost to Detroit, 4-2 today, keeping their magic number to clinch the division at 3 and, due to the Astros beating the A’s, their magic number for a playoff berth at 2.
Parker Messick finally looked a little like a rookie, giving up two bombs in the first to Jahmai Jones and Wenceel Perez. The Guardians, except for José Ramírez, Austin Hedges and CJ Kayfus, looked befuddled by the Tigers resumption of bullpen chaos theory.
My main takeaway is that it is very hard to beat a good team six times
in a row in short succession. Here’s hoping the Guardians get a good night’s rest and come out ready to seize a playoff spot and a division against a Rangers team left with nothing to play for and with several stars out… but you know a Bruce Bochy led team will finish strong.
The Guardians need Kyle Manzardo to emerge from his funk. They also can’t afford for Steven Kwan to go AWOL. I choose to believe that tomorrow will be a new day with a return to the excellence we have seen in September so far.
Jose Ramirez became the franchise’s all-time leader in extra base hits. And you know he’d trade that accomplishment for a win tonight. Let’s get him one tomorrow.
