This Past Week in MMA History:
UFC 18: The Road to the Heavyweight Title – Jan. 8, 1999
UFC 18 was the first event where the initials ‘UFC’ replaced ‘The Ultimate Fighting Championship’ in the logo.
On the card, Bas Rutten made his UFC debut and USA debut against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, stopping him in 14 minutes.
Evan Tanner also made his UFC debut at UFC 18.
UFC 35: Throwdown – Jan. 11, 2002
In the main event of UFC 35, Jens Pulver defeated B.J. Penn for the Lightweight title. (This was the first UFC event to be headlined by a Lightweight fight).
UFC Fight Night: Maynard vs. Diaz – Jan. 11, 2010
Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz rematched after their TUF bout in 2010, and Maynard took a split decision.
On the same card, Rory MacDonald made his UFC debutagainst Mike Guymon.
UFC Vegas 101: Dern vs. Ribas – Jan. 11, 2025
Just last year, Mackenzie Dern tapped out Amanda Ribas in their main event rematch — and in hindsight, this win got Dern her vacant title shot.
On the same card, Cesar Almeida smoked Abdul Razak Alhassan with a brutal punch.
Also on the card, Puna Soriano knocked out Uros Medic in just 31 seconds.
