Under crisp morning skies and ideal conditions for fast times, a massive crowd packed the Gans Creek Cross Country Course for the eighth annual Gans Creek Classic. With a field of over 30 different teams, Missouri’s women’s quad dominated the 6K race to capture the team championship, while the men battled to a solid sixth-place finish in the 8K.
Women’s 6k: Tigers Claim Personal Bests
The women’s squad set the tone bright and early at 8:00 a.m., putting together a notable pack running to claim first place overall with 56 total points, well
clear of second-place Kentucky with 136 points. Mizzou placed three runners in the overall top 10, and five in the top 25.
Leading the team was star runner Monica Wanjiku, who paced the Tigers with a fifth-place finish, crossing the line in 19:18.3. Wanjiku stayed near the front of the lead all morning, trading places between second and fifth before locking down one of the fastest times in the women’s race.
“I was like, I’m not letting anyone pass me,” Wanjiku said. “Even if I was feeling so tired, but I had the reason to keep on running for my team, for my coaches, and for my family.”
Right on her heels was Rahel Broemmel, who took 6th place overall with a career-best time of 19:38.7. After holding 10th through the 1K mark, Broemmel carved through the field after the 4K split.
Suzy Lecoutre rounded out Mizzou’s top-10 finishers, grabbing 9th place in 19:41.8, which was also a new personal record. Alongside her, Kobi Walker finished in 13th, with her new personal best of 19:54.4. Mirriam Chepkirui also managed to claim a personal best in 23rd overall with a time of 20:14.4.
Men’s 8k: Mizzou Dominates Home Course
Following the women’s victory, the men stepped up for the 8K race at 8:45 a.m., taking 6th place overall in a 30-team field with 230 points. Arkansas took top team honors with 69 points, led by individual champion Ernest Cheruiyot.
Freshman Jean Kipchumba turned in an eye-opening performance, running unattached in the race and placing 12th overall in a crowded field of 254 runners with a time of 22:59.7. His abilities as a freshman against elite competition signals big things ahead for Mizzou’s front line.
The story of the day on the men’s side was Elijah Limo, who executed a memorable race. Crossing the 1K mark buried in 88th place, Limo continuously picked off runners over the remaining 7K to cross 21st overall in 23:19.1.
Raymond Kipkoech finished 26th overall, clocking a personal-best 23:24.5. Tyler Freiner followed in 38th with a personal best of 23:35.6, while Joshua Allison rounded out Mizzou’s top-50 finishers with his own personal record of 23:45.4.

What’s Next
With a home trophy in hand, Mizzou will take its momentum up north to Madison, Wisconsin, for the Nuttycombe Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
