You’re probably still dealing with your World Cup hangover, but wake up, nerds, the preseason is starting! Andoni Iraola takes his piecemeal Liverpool team to begin their US tour today. The first stop is Nashville, Tennessee for a game against Sunderland.
With plenty of players still enjoying their breaks, the team will be without many of its stars. However, this will be the time to see new signing Jeremy Jacquet likely team up with senior player Joe Gomez in defense. Liverpool fans are all now familiar
with Giorgi Mamardashvili after his lengthy stint in goal in place of the injured Alisson Becker. Other players to look out for are the young strike Will Wright and Rio Ngumoha. Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Milos Kerkez, and Harvey Elliott are all also in the squad that travelled across the pond.
Players who haven’t returned from their break in time for this friendly include Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson Becker, Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, and Ryan Gravenberch. New signing Victor Munoz will also miss the tour, but he will join the Reds as a World Cup Champion soon, despite not featuring in any of Spain’s World Cup matches. On the more depressing side, players missing due to injury include Hugo Ekitike, Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley, Stefan Bajcetic, and Giovanni Leoni. Endo and Bajcetic are short term issues that should be resolved soon, but Ekitike, Bradley, and Leoni continue their long term recoveries.
Despite the missing players, it will still be exciting to try and get a feeling for what the team will look like under Iraola and without the steadying presence for Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
