Bayern Munich may have collected another three points with a 2-1 victory over SV Elversberg, but Vincent Kompany knows his team still has another level to reach. The Bayern Munich manager acknowledged that the performance was not yet where he wants it to be, particularly during a first half in which his side struggled to consistently impose itself.
Kompany was asked why Bayern Munich have yet to find their best form despite beginning the season with a series of positive results. Rather than pointing
to a lack of effort, the Belgian highlighted the demanding schedule his players have already faced and the importance of maintaining intensity throughout an entire campaign.
“It’s true that the first half today has shown that there’s still work to do. We shouldn’t forget that the guys didn’t have a long vacation, they came back, won the Supercup in Dortmund, against Stuttgart, against Bodø. We should keep that in mind. Yes, we could’ve done better in the first half. We’re aware of that. These moments happen during a season, and we have to react to them. It wasn’t a lazy performance, but wasn’t a 100% active performance with 100% focus on and off the ball. The question is how to keep that up over an entire season. The rotation, which I call ‘competition’, comes then into play. We should just keep going,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That explanation provides important context for Bayern Munich’s performances. The club has already played a demanding run of matches, and Kompany appears more concerned with how his players respond to occasional dips in intensity than with expecting them to be perfect every week.
The manager’s comments about rotation…err, competition are also worth watching. Kompany wants to keep creating opportunities for players to push each other for starting positions while allowing key players to manage the physical demands of the season.
Bayern Munich ultimately did what mattered most against SV Elversberg by securing all three points. Still, Kompany’s assessment makes clear that results alone will not satisfy him. The next challenge is turning those positive results into more complete performances as the schedule continues to intensify.
