Bayern Munich had a rough go of it in 2023/24 — a calamity, by the standards it had set in its eleven-year Bundesliga title streak prior to that. That season, and the turnaround since then, is the example sporting boss Max Eberl leans on nowadays when dealing with accusations that the German top flight has become too one-sided.
“I remember a year and a half ago we finished third in the league,” Bayern’s executive board member for sport said, in remarks captured by Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “Bayer Leverkusen
was the reference back then. VfB Stuttgart impressed with some very attractive football. We were on the ground.
“After that, we made decisions — without buying players left, right and center. We made good and smart decisions. We signed Tom Bischof on a free, Jonathan Tah on a free, promoted young players like Lennart Karl and Wisdom Mike from our campus. It’s not like we made a big ‘transfer attack’ — we had thoughts and ideas with our coach and made a strategy. Now fast forward a year and a half, you can see that we made good decisions.”
The best of those decisions? Bringing in head coach Vincent Kompany to replace Thomas Tuchel, though of course, Kompany was reportedly far from first choice at the time. Conveniently, these are decisions made under Eberl’s own tenure in Bavaria. But he has earned it with how far Bayern has come since the Tuchel days — which even for a club as well resourced as Bayern, was far from a given. Look at any messy English club for reference.
However, as a result, the Bundesliga is extremely one-sided this year — and as long as Kompany is at the helm, for the foreseeable future. So expect the topic to continue.
