Newcastle United are exploring a potential move for Dutch international and AS Roma forward Donyell Malen as they look to address their attacking issues this summer.
“Donyell Malen could yet be sold by Roma this summer as Newcastle United eye up a deal for the Aston Villa loanee,” Football Insider reported on May 8.
The Dutch forward has played at the Serie A club on loan this season, and he is expected to join Roma permanently following a productive spell, but his future could quickly change depending
on the club’s financial and sporting situation.
“It is understood that they are weighing up the possibility of selling him for a ‘quick profit’ this summer,” the report says.
Newcastle’s interest comes amid their expected push to strengthen a hellaciously underperforming forward line after a difficult season marred by poor production by all of their strikers.
“Newcastle want to add a new striker to their group this summer, and the Villa loanee has emerged as a surprise candidate for them of late,” the report says.
Malen’s form in Italy has made him an attractive option, with his output significantly improving since leaving the Premier League. He has bagged 11 goals in 15 Serie A matches to go with two assists, and he’s also contributed one goal in two Europa League outings.
However, any deal for Malen will inevitably be expensive.
“Malen’s permanent switch is set to go through for £25million, and Roma are only interested in a deal that would see them make a substantial amount of money,” the report says.
