Newcastle United has significant work still to do before the transfer window closes after a summer in which the club has lost several established stars and undergone a managerial change, with Matthias Jaissle now overseeing the rebuild at St. James’ Park following Eddie Howe’s exit.
One familiar transfer target has now resurfaced as a potential attacking addition for the Magpies.
CaughtOffside’s Mark Brus reports that Newcastle has rekindled its interest in Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, with
industry figures believing the Magpies could be particularly well positioned to meet City’s valuation after the Bruno sale was confirmed on Saturday.
“Newcastle know they need to do some serious business up front,” a source told Brus. “Their forward signings last summer haven’t done it, there are already serious doubts about Nick Woltemade’s future, and Marmoush is someone they’ve got high up on their list.”
Newcastle’s renewed interest comes after the departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno generated significant transfer income, with those three sales alone totaling up to £250 million. According to CaughtOffside, that strong financial position could give the Magpies an advantage if their interest develops into an actual bid.
“He won’t come cheap, but Newcastle are under pressure to make a splash like that now, after recouping so much from player sales,” the source told Brus. “There hasn’t been an approach yet, but it’s one to keep an eye on, for sure.”
According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City values Marmoush at approximately €60 million to €65 million (£52.2 million to £56.5 million), with “respected figures in the industry” believing Newcastle could be best placed to afford that asking price.
The 27-year-old’s situation is worth monitoring because City is not actively pushing him out. While Brus reports that the Cityzens would be comfortable retaining Marmoush for squad depth, he adds that intermediaries familiar with Marmoush’s situation in Manchester and Enzo Maresca’s plans expect City to consider doing business if the club’s valuation is met.
Newcastle, however, would also face stiff competition. Tottenham and Barcelona reportedly remain interested in Marmoush, but the good news is neither appears to have made him its immediate priority as things stand. That said, Spurs held informal contacts with the player and club, but Tottenham seems to be focused on other targets, according to CaughtOffside.
