Villanova has been mentioned as a potential landing spot for BYU transfer Robert Wright III.
The Wildcats are in need of a point guard this offseason after Acaden Lewis entered the transfer portal. It makes sense that Kevin Willard would be interested in the top point guard, and one of the best overall players, on the market.
The question remains — is Villanova a fit? The answer might be yes and no.
On the court, Wright is a definite fit and the type of elite player needed. He averaged 18.1 points and 4.6
assists per game in his only season at BYU. Wright’s defense leaves much to be desired. Lewis set the freshman program record for steals in a single season so the Wildcats like a backcourt that can defend. What Wright lacks in defense, he makes up for beyond the arc.
Wright shot 41% from three-point range during his sophomore year. This opens up his ability to get in the paint and either score or create for his teammates. Wright is a true point guard and one that will come with a heavy price tag. This is where some doubts creep in.
There were some hard feelings when Wright left Baylor after a tremendous freshman campaign. Now, he is back in the portal but there is a chance he cold return to BYU if the price is right. Let’s not forget that AJ Dybantsa will likely be leaving for the NBA Draft and Richie Saunders has exhausted his eligibility. BYU might have the ability to pay Wright the $3 million — or more — that he is looking for.
With that being said, Villanova has some money to work with too and it will be interesting to see if more opens up with a player like Wright available. As of now, the Wildcats are tasked with replacing three starters and more production coming off the bench.
Wright will have plenty of suitors during this process and Villanova should be a team that makes a phone call.
