- WEDNESDAY WINS: The Cubs are 15-10 on Wednesday, tied with Saturday for their second-best record of any day of the week, behind 11-7 on Monday. They are 7-5 at home on Wednesday, behind 5-1 on Thursday, 9-2 on Monday and 8-5 on Saturday. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- COMING FROM BEHIND: The Cubs are 41-22 in games in which they have erased a deficit. But last night’s loss, after they had tied the scored at 2, was their third in a row, sixth of seven and eighth of 10 beginning Aug. 21. Before then, they had won 22 of 24. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- RISPy BUSINESS: The Cubs’ 1 for 18 last night with runners in scoring position was their worst of the season with at least one hit with RISP. They were 1 for 16 in their 6-5, walk-off loss at Seattle on Aug. 21 and 1 for 15 in a 4-3 loss at home vs. the Pirates way back on April 11. The Cubs had 10-13 at bats with one hit in nine more games. They were 0 for 13 in a 6-0 loss at Texas on May 9. - TODAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Carlos Zambrano throws seven solid innings and ties the Cubs franchise record for home runs by a pitcher when he hits his sixth of the year. The Cubs defeat the Reds in Cincinnati, 11-4. It happened 20 years ago today, Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006.

Kevin Gausman’s last five starts: Good, bad, good, bad, good.
So… let’s hope we are not in line for “bad” tonight.
The potential good news: When he faced the Marlins earlier this year as a member of the Blue
Jays, May 27 in Toronto, he held them to one run over five innings, with five strikeouts. That’d work tonight, I think.
Ryan Gusto faced the Cubs Sept. 5 in Miami and they hit him hard — 10 hits and five runs in 4.2 innings, including a home run by Michael Conforto.
Since then he’s had decent outings against two good teams, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, allowing a total of four runs in 10.1 innings over those two games.
Hopefully the Cubs can continue to hit with, uh, gusto against Gusto.
