Junior Caminero was the resounding winner of our recent poll of which player the Rays should offer a contract extension to next.
This should come as no surprise!
This team’s All-Star and Home Run Derby hero is just 22 years young next season, with 45 homers, 110 RBIs, and a .264/.311/.535 slash line over 154 games in 2025. By June, Dayn Perry was comparing Caminero to Hall-of-Famers thanks in particular to Camerino’s bat speed, and by October he finished the season atop the MLB rankings with a 78.6
mph bat. Given that bat speed might not start declining until your 30’s, Caminero could be a fairly safe investment.
It’s not clear whether the new ownership group has a pocketbook deep enough to make as big a splash for their roster as it appears to be capable for the planned new stadium, but if they were looking to engender some trust with the fans, finding a price to lock Caminero into a contract with the Rays would be the way to do it.
