Another victory means it is time to crown the Boss Hog of the week. Marcus Mariota took home the crown following a Week 3 win over Seattle, so let us see where the votes swing today.
As a quick reminder of the rules: each week represents a standalone vote. At the end of the year, I will tally up all the weekly winners to crown the official, definitive Boss Hog of the Season.
Without further ado, let us look at the standout performers. Here is your first nominee for this week’s award following a 27-10
victory over Philadelphia:
Jayden Daniels
Stat Line: 16-of-29 passing, 217 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT | two carries, 23 rushing yards
It was not always pretty, but grit wins games. The first quarter was undeniably rough, featuring a couple of sloppy drives to start the evening. Showing real leadership, Daniels even lit a fire under his teammates after that sluggish start. Once the game slowed down, the offense found its rhythm and exploded for 27 unanswered points. While they did leave some points on the table by missing a few touchdowns, Daniels did exactly what a franchise quarterback is supposed to do. He put the team in a position to win. He was absolute money with the deep ball, going a perfect 3-for-3 on throws of 20-plus yards. It may not have been a flawless masterpiece, but it was an resilient, winning performance.
Stefon Diggs, Treylon Burks and Antonio Williams
Stat Line(s):
- Burks: three catches, 81 yards (Long of 53 yards)
- Williams: five catches, 54 yards
- Diggs: three catches, 38 yards, 1 TD
Sometimes, greatness requires a group effort. With the offense missing Terry McLaurin, the entire receiver room had to step up on the national stage. They delivered in a massive way. Things started off rocky when Burks suffered a brutal drop on third down, but he didn’t let it shake his confidence. He came alive as the game went on, looking like he is truly coming into his own with this team. His highlight of the night was an explosive 53-yard snag that came while beating elite cornerback Quinyon Mitchell over the top — proving he is turning into a phenomenal reclamation project for this franchise. Alongside him, Antonio Williams proved to be a move-the-chains artist, snagging five crucial grabs to keep drives alive. Veteran Stefon Diggs did what he does best, hauling in a beautiful 8-yard strike for the game’s only passing touchdown. This collective unit played admirably under pressure, and they will need to bring that same unified energy into next week’s battle.
Daronte Jones
Stat Line: 10 Points Allowed, 5.0 Sacks, zero points conceded in the final three quarters
Who says a coach can’t win a Hog? Jones has come under serious fire lately for his unit’s inabilty to put together a complete game of football. Facing a heavily injured Philadelphia squad, this was an absolute “prove-it” moment, and Washington responded by delivering their most dominant defensive performance to date. His aggressive, blitz-heavy scheme began hitting home perfectly, generating a staggering 44% quarterback pressure rate. By neutralizing the Eagles and pitching a shutout over the final 45 minutes, Jones showcased coaching excellence under heavy scrutiny.
Drew Stevens
Stat Line: 4-for-5 field goals (56-yard long), 1 PAT | 13 Total Points
When the offense takes a quarter to wake up, you need your special teams unit to keep you in striking distance. Stevens did exactly that. After missing an early 55-yarder, he showed absolute ice in his veins by bouncing back to drill a monster 56-yard field goal late in the first quarter to get Washington on the board. He went on to hit three more field goals throughout the night, locking down points whenever the offense stalled. In a game where leaving points on the table could have cost the Commanders, Stevens accounted for nearly half the team’s scoring and kept the pressure firmly on Philly.
Nick Cross
Stat Line: nine total tackles (5 Solo), one TFL
Cross turned in a relatively solid game, acting as an eraser on the back end. His signature moment came in the third quarter when the defense was completely suffocating Philly’s momentum. He sniffed out an in-line blocking adjustment, blew past the tight end and crashed through the line to drop the runner for a massive 3-yard loss on third down. Providing that kind of punishing security on the back end is exactly what makes a true defensive anchor.
The Defensive Front
Stat Line: Five Sacks, one Forced Fumble
Two silly roughing-the-passer calls aside, this defensive front seven played an excellent football game. Stepping onto the national stage without cornerstone defensive tackles Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw, the remaining rotation refused to break. Instead, the defensive line generated nonstop heat from the first whistle to the last, harassing the backfield to the tune of 5.0 total sacks — one of which resulted in a critical, momentum-shifting forced fumble. Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles also continued his high-impact work, generating pressure and flying downhill to clear out plays. Because it was impossible to separate everyone’s individual hustle in such a unified clinic, the entire front seven gets a well-deserved collective shoutout on this week’s ballot.
This team is still far from a finished product, but they are certainly not out of any fight yet. The hope now is to keep this momentum rolling and continue stringing together wins against a highly inconsistent Rams team next week.
