The New England Patriots entered training camp with two kickers on their active roster. On Tuesday, ahead of the NFL roster cutdown deadline, they parted ways with one of them to officially put the competition to bed.
Veteran Parker Romo has been waived, according to a report by Mark Daniels of MassLive. As a consequence, seventh-round rookie Andy Borregales seems to have won the job.
Romo, 28, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2022. He started out with the New Orleans Saints, later
spent time in the XFL, and eventually found his way to Minnesota via the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. Hew saw his first actual game action with the Vikings in 2024, appearing in four contests as an injury replacement.
Despite making 11 of his 12 field goal tries, he was let go in December and joined the Patriots practice squad. Romo did not see any game action for the club in 2024, but was retained via a reserve/futures pact after the season. Following the free agency departure of incumbent Joey Slye, he was the lone kicker on the team’s roster until Borregales was added in the draft.
Romo and Borregales went on to have a head-to-head battle over the next four months. Even though the veteran went a perfect 2-for-2 in preseason, the team opted to go with the rookie who finished the exhibition slate with a 3-for-5 performance.
With Romo now let go, and following the earlier moves on Tuesday that saw offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs and cornerback Miles Battle also being waived, the Patriots have 73 players on their active roster. They need to be below the 53-man threshold by 4 p.m. ET.
