Eddie Howe has described his “relief” at retaining William Osula last summer after the forward’s proposed move to Eintracht Frankfurt collapsed late in the window.
“It was well documented that it was quite
close for him that he could have left,” Howe said ahead of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham. “A loan was always our preference, because we wanted Will to play and we wanted him to continue his development. The next step was for him to try and play regularly. So that was the aim.”
The move ultimately fell through due to disagreements between the clubs over whether it would be a permanent £30 million transfer or a loan with an option to buy. Newcastle’s hierarchy chose to withdraw at the last minute, a decision Howe now views as crucial.
“Much to our relief, it didn’t happen because obviously, Yoane picked up an injury. And Will’s vitally important,” Howe said. “We believe in his talents. He’s got his speed. I think you could see that when he came on the pitch the other day – he’s quick, he’s athletic. But what he’s added through the continued attitude he’s had to his training is a lot more know-how in terms of how to manage game situations.”
Osula, 22, has scored three goals this season and delivered an energetic cameo in Newcastle’s comeback win over Fulham last weekend. His growth, Howe said, reflects maturity earned through adversity.
“Every time he’s come on the pitch this season, invariably he’s performed, and I think that’s given him further belief for his next appearance,” Howe said. “He’s nursing an ankle injury, but he’s showing real maturity.”
With Yoane Wissa still sidelined by a knee injury, Osula’s presence has proven vital as backup to Nick Woltemade, with Howe calling him “the complete package” ahead of the clash against Tottenham.
