Yeremy Pino has joined Luis de la Fuente in backing Gavi following criticism of the Barcelona midfielder for a tackle in training on Rodri.
De la Fuente played down the incident at a press conference ahead of his team’s friendly with Peru, while Pino has poked fun at Gavi but also showered him with praise.
Asked what Gavi brings to the Spain team, Pino replied with a laugh: “Kicks.”
He then went to to add: “No, seriously. His grit, his camaraderie, and the joy he brings. He’s a player who energizes
all his teammates and contributes a lot to the group.
“On the field, he always gives his all, leaving everything on the field in every play, and that’s something we value immensely. He’s a very important player for us. Gavi is the heart and soul of the team.”
Gavi has successfully returned from a long injury lay-off to make the Spain squad for World Cup 2026, admitting he experienced a “rush of happiness” at being handed the call-up.
He made an impact for Barcelona at the tail end of the season and will be hoping he can do the same for La Roja at this summer’s tournament.
