In what can only be described as a shocking development, Purdue AD Mike Bobisnki has announced his plans to retire at the end of 2026. It was first rumored by Pete Thamel before Bobisnki jumped out in front of the rumor with an official statement announcing his retirement plans. From the statement:
“The time is right for me, both personally and professionally, to step away from one of the absolute best jobs in college athletics,” Bobinski said. “And it is the right time for Purdue to have the opportunity
to identify the next person to lead our athletic program through the ongoing cycle of change and evolving new era of intercollegiate athletics.
“I am beyond grateful for the opportunities Purdue has provided me these past 10 years,” Bobinski added. “I’m so thankful for the incredible staff, extraordinary and inspiring coaches, and outstanding student-athletes whom I’ve been fortunate to know and work alongside. Purdue is a special place that uniquely lives and remains true to its values, and it will continue to be that thanks to the supportive and principled leadership of our board and our presidents.”
Bobinski was hired at Purdue in August 2016 and had what most would say was an up and down tenure at Purdue. For basketball, he did not hire Matt Painter but did make sure that he stuck around, so that’s good right? Sort of hard to give him any credit there. For football he inherited a mess but course corrected with the hiring of Jeff Brohm and subsequent trip to the Big Ten Title Game, albeit as part of the mighty Big Ten West. However, he then let Brohm get away (I know it’s hard to blame Bobisnki for that due to the hometown factor but it still happened under his watch) which led to the hiring of…Ryan Walters. An absolutely disaster of a hire. The man coached 24 football games at Purdue and went 5-19. It was an abysmal performance based on just about every metric in the book. Walters not only couldn’t coach he couldn’t seem to recruit very well either. Or at least consistently enough for a Big Ten football team. Now, Barry Odom is heading into his second season and if I’m him, I’m nervous. New ADs always want to put their stamp on a program and if Odom doesn’t see a big turnaround this season he could be in trouble. Then there’s the other major sports at Purdue where volleyball has been consistently good but again Shondell pre-dated Bobinski. Looking at this though it now does make sense as to why Katie Gearlds wasn’t fired. If Bobisnki knew he was leaving it made sense to give her one more year and let his successor decide her fate. She will need a big turnaround to survive after the 2026-2027 season.
The process to hire his replacement will begin soon but this happens at an awkward time as Purdue is without a full-time president with President Chiang heading to Northwestern and interim President Mitch Daniels will be back in the saddle. Much more to come on this, but what do you think of Bobisnki’s tenure at Purdue?
