The Detroit Tigers dropped the series opener at home against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, 5-4, in a game that Tarik Skubal was supposed to start, but instead, Tyler Holton took the mound to open things up for the second straight day. The weather was ugly, but not nearly as bad as losing the team’s ace to the injured list.
Taking the bump for the Tigers in Game 2 is left-handed groundball specialist Framber Valdez, who has allowed two runs or less in all but one of his starts so far this season
while helping his team earn wins in five of his seven outings. That includes his previous outing against the Red Sox back in mid-April, when he threw six innings of one-run ball on three hits and two walks — the lone run came on a solo home run — while striking out seven for his second win of the season.
Opposite him is right-hander Brayan Bello, who has had a rough go at it so far in 2026, giving up fewer than four runs and lasting more than 4 2/3 innings just once through six starts. The 26-year-old took a loss the last time he saw Detroit, surrendering four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings for his second loss of the season.
