What a thing to wake up to! Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig have come to full agreement for the transfer of Dutch winger Xavi Simons. The deal is worth about €60m (£52m) and is a five year contract. Wages were not known at this time.
To
gazump a team like Chelsea so soon after being gazumped themselves by Arsenal… well, it isn’t a panacea but it sure does feel nice. Simons had been closely linked to Chelsea for over two months to the extent that it was assumed he would just go there eventually. But Chelsea dithered and delayed the deal, waiting on outgoing player sales and financial liquidity before pulling the trigger. That gave Spurs the option to swoop in and make an offer he, obviously, couldn’t refuse.
Xavi Simons was one of the gems of the transfer window. His stats dropped off a little bit at Leipzig last season, but then again Leipzig were not very good last year. At just 22 years old, Simons can play across the front line but will be seen mostly as Spurs’ coveted 10 position and on the left wing. He’s got a super high ceiling and will reunite with his Netherlands national teammmate Micky van de Ven.
God, it feels good to be the gazumpee and not the gazumper.
The suggestion is that Spurs are not yet done in the window; they will continue to look for another attacker or midfielder, and are also in the market for a central defender. But that’s for later. Today, let’s celebrate swooping a really good young attacking player right from under the nose of BlueCo. That’s worthy of a .GIF party.
Are… are we so back?
