No. 10 Florida State extended its winning streak to 22 on Thursday, beating Notre Dame 7-2 to start off Players Weekend in Tallahassee. Jazzy Francik earned the win (13-1), going five innings with four hits allowed, one earned run, three walks and seven strikeouts on 80 pitches.
The win streak is tied for sixth-best in school history.
FSU started off strong, scoring three runs in the first inning. Isa Torres tripled off the left-field wall and scored on a throwing
error by left fielder Tenley Sweet. Anna Hinde followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring in Jaysoni Beachum and Kennedy Harp added a sacrifice fly to plate Ashtyn Danley.
Notre Dame freshman Lily Hagan hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning, sending it over the left-field wall to cut the deficit to 3-1. Starter Micaela Kastor then struck out two straight FSU hitters with runners at second and third to keep it there.
Torres doubled to right-center in the third, driving in two to make it 5-1. In the fifth, Hayley Griggs hit a two-run homer to center (her third of the year) to extend the Seminoles’ lead to 7-1.
Hagan hit a second homer in the sixth, a solo shot to center off reliever Makenna Reid on a full count, to make it 7-2. Reid hit then walked a batter, leading to Ashtyn Danley replacing her on the mound. A strikeout and groundout prevented any other damage.
Torres went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Notre Dame went 0-for-13 with runners on base and stranded eight. Fellow freshman Ava Zachary drew three walks for the Irish.
The series continues Friday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra, with Saturday’s finale set for 2 p.m. on ACC Network.
