Missouri cross country is back on the road and looking to keep its early-season footing this Friday, Sept. 18, traveling to the Quail Creek Golf Club in Saint Louis for the Billiken XC Invitational.
This marks the Tigers’ second meet of their 2026 campaign following stellar results at the Cyclone Preview in Ames, Iowa, on Sept. 4. After using that opening meet to get a feel for the course hosting the upcoming NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, Mizzou now moves on to its next test. Friday’s race
serves as the teams final tune-up before returning home to host the annual Gans Creek Classic.
Action at Quail Creek Golf Club kicks off Friday morning, with the women’s 6K slated for 8:30 a.m. CDT, followed by the men’s 8K at 9:15 a.m. CDT.

Recapping the Cyclone Preview
The Tiger men made an immediate statement in Ames, sweeping the top two individual spots.
Elijah Limo set the pace for the field, capturing a first-place victory with a time of 18:05.2. Raymond Kipkoech finished right on his teammate’s heels, taking second place in 18:10.6, just 5.4 seconds behind. Tyler Freiner added a strong top-six performance, placing sixth overall in 18:24.4.
On the women’s side, Mizzou put together a top showcase in the 5,000-meter race, placing three of its runners in the top four.
Monica Wanjiku led the Tiger pack, claiming second in 16:22.5. Kobi Walker trailed close behind to take third in 16:28.9. Suzy Lecoutre crossed next in fourth place with a time of 16:36.0.
Shift in Dynamics
Friday’s field will be anchored primarily by host Saint Louis University, Webster Groves and the Tigers, supplemented by local unattached runners and smaller area programs. Rather than being pulled along by a dense pack of Power 4 rivals like at the Cyclone Opener, Mizzou enters Quail Creek as the headline attraction.
Additonally, Friday’s course stretches out the distance for both squads. The women move from a 5K to a 6K, while the men step up from a 6K to a full 8K. How the Tigers manage the extra distance will be key to establishing their mid-season form ahead of the postseason.

Tucked inside South St. Louis County’s scenic Wayne C. Kennedy Recreation Complex off Wells Road and Tesson Ferry (Hwy 21), Quail Creek Golf Club provides a unique scene for Friday’s action.
Originally opened in 1988 as a premier championship-style layout designed by U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin, Quail Creek is well-known across the region for its rolling terrain and tree-lined fairways. Under new management since April 2022, the facility has undergone continuous upgrades to revitalize its grounds and restore its original beauty. This course will offer the Tigers a true Midwest terrain test.
Meet Expectations
With such promising results at the Cyclone Opener, additional individual victories are well within reach this Friday.
Elijah Limo looks to build on his dominant 6K win in Ames, while Monica Wanjiku aims to turn her second-place debut into an outright victory. Against a smaller field in St. Louis, Mizzou has a prime opportunity to sweep the top step of the podium in both the men’s and women’s races.
