The Chicago Bears are working towards setting their initial 53-man roster. We will know what 53 names will be a part of that roster later today.
This Bears’ roster is one of the deeper ones they’ve had in recent years, and when a roster is deeper, there’s opportunity for surprise cuts.
Question of the Day: Will the Chicago Bears make a surprise cut today?
When you look at the roster, there are a few spots where this could be, and it also depends on who you would consider surprising at this point.
On defense, in the secondary or linebacking group, there are no surprise
cut candidates.
Across the defensive line, could Andrew Billings be released? Zacch Pickens will almost certainly be released, but would he even be considered a surprise? I certainly don’t think so, and if Dominique Robinson is released, that wouldn’t be a surprise either.
Billings seems like the only potential surprise cut candidate on the defensive side of the ball.
On offense, the only name that could be considered a surprise is Kiran Amegadjie. If Tyler Scott is cut, would that be considered a surprise? It wouldn’t be for me. The running back room could get interesting.
My answer: I think Andrew Billings would be a shocking cut, but I just don’t see the Bears with another nose tackle-type that eats blockers like that. I think they need to keep him. If I’m taking Billings off the board, that leaves no surprises on defense for me.
On the offensive side of the ball, Scott wouldn’t be a surprise. I think some people might consider Amegadjie a surprise, but I wouldn’t.
I think when it boils down to it, if we see a surprise cut, it’s going to be Roschon Johnson. Johnson has missed a significant amount of camp with a foot issue, and that, combined with the fact that he’s had concussion issues in each of his first two seasons in the league, Ben Johnson may look at Roschon and say he is a bit redundant with Kyle Monangai (at least offensively), and if the team is comfortable enough with their other special team contributors, Roschon is a name that we may see that would surprise quite a few fans.
Will there be a surprise cut? There’s no guarantee, but if there is, I think it’s Roschon Johnson who might be looking for a new team this evening.
