The Jacksonville Jaguars eeked out a win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 to move to 3-1 on the season.
Hooray!
Here are a few stats that stand out from the victory.
125
That’s how many yards the Jaguars were penalized on Sunday.
It’s the most by Jacksonville since Week 7 of the 2019 season… when the Jags beat the Bengals in Cincinnati, 27-17.
Head coach Liam Coen said after the game, “I’ve never been a part of anything like that before in my life.”
The Jaguars had 10 penalties for 125 yards, and the Bengals weren’t far behind (11 for 108). And the teams really weren’t that sloppy. Sure, there were a few obvious calls, but most of the flags should’ve been picked up. Or not called in the first place.
Jacksonville had two touchdowns, an interception, and a lengthy kickoff return nullified by penalties. They still found a way to get the job done. Though they may not have beaten the “can’t stop great passers” allegations, they did quiet the “can’t finish ball games” concerns.
23
That’s how many rushing yards the Jaguars allowed on Sunday.
It’s the fifth-fewest in franchise history.
Jacksonville has now gone 21 straight games without allowing a single rusher to reach 75 yards on the ground. That’s the fourth-longest streak by any team in the Super Bowl era, per ESPN.
Bengals starter Chase Brown couldn’t get anything going — he finished with 10 rushing yards on 9 carries. Joe Burrow and Samaje Perine chipped in 6 and 7 yards, respectively, on 3 carries apiece. That adds up to 1.5 yards per rush for Cincinnati.
Burrow may have thrown for 428 yards, but he wasn’t all that efficient. The Jaguars held him to 7.9 yards per attempt. He had more interceptions (2) than touchdowns (1). By completely shutting down the run, Jacksonville forced Cincinnati to be one-dimensional on offense. Burrow couldn’t get the job done.
3:1
That’s the ratio of how often Jarrian Jones was targeted in coverage compared to Travis Hunter on Sunday.
Hunter was targeted 6 times, per PFF. He allowed 3 catches for 20 yards while notching 2 pass breakups.
Jones was targeted EIGHTEEN TIMES, allowing 11 catches for 133 yards. He had 1 pass breakup.
Jones finished with a 59.6 coverage grade, which seems about right, but there should probably be a grading curve. The guy was going against some elite receivers in Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. After Chase left the game in the first half with a concussion, Higgins became the focal point of Cincinnati’s offense, and Jones matched up against him for much of the game.
Half of Jones’ targets in coverage went to Higgins. He finished with 4 catches for 56 yards against Jones, compared to 7 catches for 101 yards against all other Jaguars defenders.
It was far from Jones’ best game — but it’s not like he was burned over and over again. He did just enough to help Jacksonville pull out a road victory against a playoff contender. He didn’t come close to acing the test, but in my book, he passed it.
Hunter had an easier assignment than Jones, but man oh man, he passed this week’s test with flying colors. He had a teach tape PBU, a leaping PBU, a colossal tackle, and a filthy interception negated by a penalty. The Heisman Trophy winner earned an 80.8 coverage grade from PFF.
