The Texas Rangers and pitcher Chris Martin have agreed to terms on a one year deal, per reports. No word yet on the amount, though I’m guessing it is around $4-5 million.
Martin, 39, is an Arlington native
who signed with the Rangers prior to 2018 after spending two years pitching in Japan. He was dealt to the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline in 2019, in exchange for Kolby Allard, and pitched for Atlanta, the Cubs, the Dodgers, and the Red Sox until returning to Texas on a one year deal for what he said would be his last season in 2025.
Martin was generally effective in 2025 when he was healthy, putting up a 2.98 ERA and 3.58 FIP in 42.1 innings over 49 games. However, he had a couple of stints on the injured list, and memorably departed a game after just one pitch in May, followed by him leaving a game five days later without throwing a pitch.
A healthy Martin would be the best pitcher the Rangers have added this offseason — however, one has to be concerned about whether Martin can stay healthy in 2026. The Rangers may have to manage his workload more carefully than they did in 2025, when he appeared in 49 games despite missing two months due to i.l. stints, and pitched 12 times with no days of rest.
