With the World Cup drawing closer by the day, Germany fans are still debating who should be in goal for the tournament. In light of Marc-André ter Stegen’s latest injury, many have brought up the possibility of Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer returning to the national team.
Neuer, of course, retired from the national team in 2024 after reaching the quarterfinals of the Euros. However, due to the questionable status of his supposed successor Ter Stegen, he has been constantly linked with a comeback. The
Bayern captain does not seem particularly interested in such a scenario, though.
After Bayern’s DFB-Pokal win over RB Leipzig, he was asked if his decision to retire from the national team was definitive. His answer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) was a short and simple “yes.”
Barring a sudden change of heart from the world champion, it looks like Oliver Baumann will be donning the keeper gloves for Julian Nagelsmann’s team at the World Cup. Baumann has been having a stellar season for both club and country, which will give Germany fans some hope going into the summer.
