Germany pulled off a late escape to win 4-3 over Switzerland in the first of its two March international friendlies as the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup draws near.
The Swiss struck first through Dan Ndoye, and the two sides traded goals back and forth until Liverpool star Florian Wirtz’s sensational 85th minute winner to allow his side to come away feeling positive despite a porous performance.
“We created many big chances against an opponent that usually concedes very little,” Germany head coach Nagelsmann
stated after the match, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I think we could have scored many more goals. Switzerland certainly made the most of their few chances. Flo scored a couple of exceptional goals, that has to be said.
“Defensively, things weren’t always good today. We were too passive at times. That has to be pointed out quite clearly. Overall, though, we deserved to win.”
Germany certainly had the run of play, but a leaky defense made it a nail-biter in the end, one in which magic was required to get the result. The Swiss have been tough opponents but from a German perspective, much improvement is still needed before the tournament.
