The Seattle Seahawks are playing for the Super Bowl for the first time in 11 years. Fittingly, their opponent in Super Bowl 60 is the same one they lost to in Super Bowl 49: the New England Patriots
The Seahawks have thrived under Mike Macdonald, who’s turned one of the league’s worst defenses two years ago to the top-ranked unit by DVOA and fewest points allowed. After a modest 3-2 start, the Seahawks have won 13 of their last 14 games, including four consecutive combined wins over the Los Angeles
Rams and San Francisco 49ers to take the NFC West title and eventually the NFC crown. Sam Darnold has gone from written off as a draft bust to the brink of being a Super Bowl champion. Perhaps the Seahawks have found their long-term answer at franchise QB, but we can save that for another day. There’s no denying that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a franchise wide receiver, having won Offensive Player of the Year.
It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the New England Patriots, who went from 4-13 in consecutive seasons to 14-3 and the No. 2 seed in the AFC. Year one under head coach Mike Vrabel and year two under starting quarterback Drake Maye has been a dream return to the top for what was once the NFL’s pre-eminent dynasty. Is there a new one beginning? Hopefully not. After low-scoring wins over the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos, the Pats are back in the big time in a post-Belichick and Brady world.
The big thing discussed leading up to this Super Bowl has been the schedule. New England’s regular season schedule was comically easy, whereas the Seahawks had to face the Rams and 49ers twice, in addition to the playoff-bound Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. They’re battle-tested in ways the Patriots are not, but the underdog Pats aren’t doomed to lose just because of that. The Seahawks will need to be on top of their game to secure another Super Bowl, and they’re grateful that rookie safety Nick Emmanwori’s injury was a minor one.
