The Red Sox magic number has been stubbornly stuck at five for the last couple of days, and while there’s no real concern about them ultimately getting in, it would be nice to win tonight and knock that down to three (Red Sox win + Rangers loss).
Another reason it would be nice to win this game is because Sonny Gray is starting, and this is his second to last start before the postseason. Ideally, he’ll be locking in for an excellent outing at the end of the month. Despite the loss last time out against
the Royals, he still boasts a 17-5 person record, which is 12 games over .500, and also the exact number of games the team is over .500 at 82-70. (Make of that what you will.)
Lineup wise, Nick Sogard is back at second base after Isiah Kiner-Falefa got a start there last night. Also, with Texas throwing lefty Cody Bradford, Jahmai Jones is at DH instead of Mickey Gasper. As usual, we’ll probably see a pinch hit to switch the platoon advantage there at some point in the game.
