Javier Fernández is, still, battling back from his injury issues. After being chose as one of the standout young players to accompany the senior team for the 2024 summer pre-season under Vincent Kompany, the young Spaniard suffered a succession of injuries that would keep him out for nearly 18 months. Following his return in December 2025, the former Atlético Madrid academy player was loaned out to 1. FC Nürnberg in January 2026 to collect game time at a high level.
At first, this did not work so
well as he remained rooted to the bench among his continued quest to regain full fitness. A combination of said fitness issues and insufficient belief from Nürnberg’s head coach (and former Bayern player) Miroslav Klose in Fernández’s ability to transfer his performances in training to official matches forced the highly talented youngster to bide his time.
That time arrived at the end of the season, as he started all of the last 5 games of the season and completed 90 minutes in the last two. The trend was clear: Fernández had won a starting spot in the XI. It was unfortunate, then, that the season had to end.
But it might explain why Fernández has, according to BILD (and captured by @iMiaSanMia), opted to remain at Bayern’s fierce rivals:
Bayern and Nürnberg have reached an agreement to extend Javier Fernández’s loan by one more season. The Spaniard had other options, but ultimately decided for stability under Miroslav Klose in Nürnberg. Fernández is under contract at Bayern until 2028.
BFW Analysis
As the report mentions, the big benefit to staying in Nürnberg is stability. The club has been drifting aimlessly for years and the football was largely stale, boring and uninspired as the club huffed and puffed to earn a spot in midtable in the 2. Bundesliga. However, Fernández is still building up his fitness and has prioritized regular minutes, given the starting spot he has now won, over any more ambitious project.
It can be expected that this will be a dry loan and, if the next 12 months go well, he could be on his way to finally fulfilling his huge talent.
