The Wisconsin Badgers have finally got some quarterback transfer portal news, as starter Billy Edwards is using a medical redshirt and heading to the transfer portal for his final year of eligibility.
Edwards, Wisconsin’s top transfer in 2025, was considered a significant financial addition for the team last offseason, coming in to be the team’s starter after one full year as a starter at Maryland.
However, he saw action in just two games, suffering a knee injury in Wisconsin’s first game of the season and then re-aggravating the injury upon his return in Week 4. He never came back for Wisconsin, preserving another year of eligibility with a medical redshirt, and is now looking elsewhere for his last year of college football.
The Badgers are expected to add at least one, but likely two transfer portal quarterbacks this offseason after adding three last offseason. They need a starter, but also some depth at the position. Currently, Danny O’Neil, Carter Smith, and incoming freshman Ryan Hopkins are the projected scholarship quarterbacks for 2026.
But, Edwards was an expected loss, although head coach Luke Fickell had said there were conversations about potentially bringing him back in 2026. Still, that probably couldn’t have been as a starter, given the injury concern and the need for dependable quarterback play after years of inconsistency.
We’ll see if there’s any other outgoing movement in the transfer portal for Wisconsin, but they have their first loss this offseason at the position.
