Bayern Munich and Arsenal went into halftime level at 1-1, but the stats suggest Vincent Kompany’s side has made the most of its chances despite having less of the ball.
Bayern held just 44% possession compared to Arsenal’s 56%, and have completed 165 passes at an 85% accuracy rate. Arsenal completed 207 passes, but that extra possession has not translated into a clear advantage in front of goal.
In fact, Bayern leads the expected goals battle, 0.82 to 0.58, and have put two shots on target compared
to Arsenal’s one. Both teams have six or fewer total shots, while Bayern have also created two big chances to Arsenal’s one.
The biggest frustration for Bayern Munich will be the missed opportunity: one big chance has gone begging, and the Bavarians could have taken greater advantage of their opportunities. Meanwhile, Arsenal have been more comfortable keeping possession but have struggled to turn that control into dangerous chances.
The second half is wide open. Bayern Munich has shown it can hurt Arsenal without dominating the ball, but it will need to remain clinical and avoid giving the Gunners opportunities to take control.
At 1-1, Bayern Munich has reason to be encouraged, but it needs to turn its attacking threat into a decisive advantage after the break.
