Did you ever wonder which Bundesliga team might have the toughest European schedule this season?
But maybe tough is not the correct word. What about….arduous?
Why? Because sometimes tough, arduous can be about more than just the competition on the pitch. When weighing that scenario, Casino.at looked at the various midweek travel schedules that Bundesliga clubs will have to manage for Europe this season and there are a few that have it rough.
For the analysis, Google Maps was used to determine the distance
between the respective stadiums. The figures represent the total distance for a return journey. The total distance is calculated by adding together the away journeys for each club’s fixtures in the league or league phase of the respective European competition.
Borussia Dortmund faces the biggest travel burden among German clubs, with its four Champions League away trips adding up to a staggering 15,902 kilometers. Their journey to Azerbaijan to face Sabah alone covers 8,370 kilometers round trip, while trips to Bodø/Glimt, Arsenal, and Aston Villa add even more mileage.
Bayern Munich ranks fourth overall, with 11,960 kilometers of European travel on the schedule. The German champions will make trips to Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, and Viking in Norway, among others.
Interestingly, SC Freiburg may have the toughest European schedule from a travel perspective. Despite having only three away fixtures in the Conference League, Freiburg will cover 12,692 kilometers. Their average of 4,231 kilometers per away match is the highest among all German clubs, with the trip to Trabzonspor alone accounting for 7,244 kilometers.
TSG Hoffenheim rank second overall at 12,864 kilometers, while VfB Stuttgart have the lightest European travel schedule at 7,766 kilometers.
For Bayern Munich, the distance is another factor Vincent Kompany will have to manage alongside domestic fixtures. Long flights, different environments and compressed schedules can all impact player fatigue and squad rotation.
The Bavarians have the depth and experience to handle the demands, but the grind is real (as Borussia Dortmund is about to find out).
