Kiss your families good bye, “work” remotely, post up in an Applebee’s and gorge yourself on 2 for $25 menu options… THERE’S 11 HOURS OF WORLD CUP SOCCER ON THE TV TODAY – OR YOU COULD GO TO A GAME SINCE IT’S IN AMERICA, CANADA, AND MEXICO THIS YEAR.
The day kicks off with Qatar vs. Switzerland in a matchup of teams that are also in the group with Canada played at not Levi’s Stadium because all the sudden FIFA is concerned about the sport being commercialized the wrong way.
Brazil will then take on
Morocco in what might be the most interesting match of the day and the best matchup of the tournament with no. 6 taking on no. 8 in the FIFA rankings. The Atlas Lions are known for being defensively stout and wanting to hit on the counter with Brazil having 11 players who all want to score all the time and do so in beautiful and fun fashion. In a way, both teams play into each other’s strengths so it has all the makings of a tricky fixture. Prediction: Pele comes back to life wearing a NY Cosmos jersey and scores the game winner against Johan Cruyff and the Washington Diplomats in a wacky penalty shootout 5-4.
For the first time ever Haiti and Scotland will face off in a soccer match. Gillette Stadium will be inflicted on the teams and fans but Haiti might have the majority of the support. Boston is home to the second largest Haitian population in the US and the team hasn’t been to the World Cup since the days of Manno Sanon.
Finally, there is Soccer After Dark as Australia vs. Turkiye kicks off in the wee hours. The Aussies have the clear advantage here as the extreme north of British Colombia features some of the most inhospitable conditions known outside of Australia. As long as they’re not eaten by bears or freeze to death they should be ok. However, Arda Güler, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and Kenan Yıldız are technically gifted and form a young core that could emerge as a team that could make a surprise run to the semi-finals if they can get past Australia, Paraguay, and… oh great. Turkey wins 6-1 but Ferdi Kadıoğlu gets lost and ends up in the Norther Territories.
