Bayern Munich supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß was asked about Lothar Matthäus having predicted correctly that former VfB Stuttgart attacker Nick Woltemade would cost somewhere between €80-€100m.
Of course, Woltemade would move to Newcastle United for a deal worth a total package of €90 million (€85 + €5 million in a bonus structure), while Bayern Munich’s offer was rumored to top out at €55 million.
Hoeneß, however, does not buy it — despite Bayern Munich’s heavy interest in the Germany international.
“(Matthäus) was just lucky. He (Woltemade) isn’t worth the 90 million. That only happened because of the money flowing from Saudi Arabia,” said during an appearance on SPORT1-Doppelpass (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Ouch.
Uli Hoeneß has never been one to hold back and Newcastle might have engaged in a bit of a panic buy, but as the old adage goes — “You are worth whatever someone wants to pay you” or in this case, “You are worth whatever someone wants to pay for you.”
